Taxation without Representation?
Voter rolls and residency matter! Leah Anderson, the Republican Candidate for Minnehaha Auditor, gives us her take on the importance of accurate voter rolls and residency requirements for voting.
Who ARE These People?
Over the past several weekends one of my door knockers walked an area that has voters registered at vacant lots, a power substation, office buildings, parking lots, hotels, and empty houses.
One Sunday afternoon alone, 92 registered voters were in this category.
Taxation without representation is tyranny. — James Otis
It is easy to brush off voter rolls issues in South Dakota because we require signature matching on absentee ballots and ID verification at polling locations. However, there are still significant problems with voter roll discrepancies. Some of the problems include:
people who do not live in an area choosing local representation
absentee ballots delivered to places other than the applicant's residence which makes fraud easier
difficulty reaching voters (when the rolls are inaccurate there is no way for the candidates to respect a person's right to privacy or limit contact to people of a particular party)
voters registering and voting more than once
Also, tens of thousands of people who do not live in South Dakota are registered to vote in our state. While legal, there have been questions about why it makes sense for a person who only has to be in the state for one day to have a voice in our local government.
GET INVOLVED — If you are opposed to having people who don’t really live in South Dakota voting in our elections, contact your legislators about changing the South Dakota law.
If I am Minnehaha Auditor, I will work hard to get the voter rolls cleaned up and our residency laws changed! Please help me get the message out to voters in the next few weeks by CLICKING HERE. Early voting has started and in-person voting is Tuesday, November 8th!"
Thanks, Leah
