Precinct Committee People Represent Their Constituents
Thoughts in HJR 5001 being considered in the SD legislature
We are a republic form of government, not a democratic form of government. That is why we sent people to Washington to represent us. We don't go. We send people to Pierre to represent us and vote on each bill. We don't go.
I believe it was around 1912 that we decided to have precinct people, who we vote in, to represent us on a local level, to vote for us concerning our Constitutional Officers. It is the true basic form of a republican form of government. That is a grassroots government and is what our founding fathers wanted.
Precinct people are dedicated to serving their precinct and are accountable to the people they live with every day. It appears to me that the same way our Federal Government is trying to take away the responsibilities of the states, our State Legislators are trying to take away the responsibility of our precinct people.
This is a true republic and I believe it should stay that way.
