Help Not Harm bill passes SD House and Senate
HB 1080 passed both the SD House and the Senate and is headed to Governor Noem for signature.
The PRE Help Not Harm team had a resounding victory as HB 1080, which prohibits mutilating sex change surgeries and hormone blockers for minors, passed both the House and the Senate. It is now with Governor Noem for signature. Noem said she will sign the bill into law.
The legislation was introduced by Bethany Soye, Rep. District 9. Chris David and the PRE Help Not Harm team did an amazing job of supporting the bill through the legislative process.
Volunteers demonstrated in frigid weather, drove through a blizzard to show support in Pierre, and hosted and served luncheons in both the House and the Senate. The voices of the volunteers were amplified by the testimonies of three nationally recognized de-transitioners.
Due to everyone’s hard work and support, the bill made it through the approval process without being significantly altered. This means the legislation holds medical professionals accountable making the South Dakota law a model for the nation.
The bill will sponsored by Representatives Soye (prime), Auch, Aylward, Bahmuller, Callies, Deutsch, Gross, Hansen, Jensen (Kevin), Jensen (Phil), Karr, Krohmer, Kull, Ladner, Lems, May, Mills, Moore, Mulally, Odenbach, Otten (Ernie), Overweg, Perry, Peterson (Sue), Pinnow, Randolph, Reimer, Schaefbauer, and Sjaarda and Senators Novstrup (prime), Bolin, Frye-Mueller, Hoffman (Brent), Pischke, Stalzer, Wiik, and Zikmund.
There were only three Republicans who did not support the bill.
Rep. Mike Derby, District 34 (Rapid City)
Rep. Dennis Krull, District 30 (Hill City)
Rep. Jess Olson, District 34 (Rapid City)
Sen. Joshua Klumb, District 20 (Mitchell) supported the bill, but was not able make the vote.
